Nytt vaccin mot amerikansk yngelröta

Amerikanska myndigheter (US Department of Agriculture) har godkänt ett vaccin som kan hjälpa motverka amerikansk yngelröta, enligt en artikel i den brittiska tidningen The Guardian, US government approves use of world’s first vaccine for honeybees. Vaccinet blandas med drottninggelé och sedan kan man bygga upp ett samhälle med en immun drottning.

The vaccine works by incorporating some of the bacteria into the royal jelly fed by worker bees to the queen, which then ingests it and gains some of the vaccine in the ovaries. The developing bee larvae then have immunity to foulbrood as they hatch, with studies by Dalan suggesting this will reduce death rates from the disease.

Vaccinet kommer att användas endast av yrkesbiodlare i början men det finns stora förhoppningar att det kan leda till färre fall av den dödliga sjukdomen. När vaccinet kommer hit till Europa är okänt.
