Kan aluminium vara skadlig för bin?

En artikel på CNN ställer frågan om aluminium har en negativ påverkan på bihälsa, What's giving bees dementia? En ny brittisk studie, Bumblebee Pupae Contain High Levels of Aluminium, har hittat höga nivåer av aluminium i humlors larver. Även om man inte vet säkert vilka effekter aluminium har på honungsbin är det klart att metallen finns i höga halter i blommornas nektar och det finns tydligt bevis på metallens skadliga effekter i skog och sjö. Om det finns höga aluminiumhalter hos humlor kan man dra en logisk slutsats att det finns lika höga nivåer hos honungsbin. Ett spår som forskarna vill följa framöver är kopplingen mellan aluminium och minnesförlust (man misstänker en koppling till Alzheimers) och om detta kan bidra till bidöden.

- While no other statistically significant relationships were found relating aluminium to bee or colony health, the actual content of aluminium in pupae are extremely high and demonstrate significant exposure to aluminium. Bees rely heavily on cognitive function and aluminium is a known neurotoxin with links, for example, to Alzheimer’s disease in humans. The significant contamination of bumblebee pupae by aluminium raises the intriguing spectre of cognitive dysfunction playing a role in their population decline.
